Free Printable Shopping List Template (A4, A5 & Personal Size) — A Simple System for Smarter Grocery Trips
If you’ve ever stood in the middle of a grocery store scrolling through three different apps trying to remember what you actually came in for, this free printable shopping list insert is for you. It’s a simple, no-fuss layout designed to slide right into your planner or ring binder , and it’s completely free to download.

Why I Made This Free Shopping List Printable
At SmilelineCo, I build Better Systems for Better Days , and a shopping list is one of the most underrated “systems” a household can have. It sounds small, but a messy shopping routine quietly drains money and time every single week: duplicate purchases, forgotten items, impulse buys, and that annoying second trip to the store because you forgot the one thing you actually needed.
I designed this insert to be the entry point into a bigger habit , tracking not just what you buy, but what it costs and when you bought it. That third column, Purchase Time, is intentional. It turns a plain list into a lightweight spending log, which makes it much easier to spot patterns (are you buying coffee three times a week? restocking snacks too often?) without needing a full budgeting app.
This is also a “give first” piece for me. I wanted a genuinely useful, nicely designed freebie that people could start using immediately , no email walls, no complicated setup , before exploring the rest of the Life Systems Studio catalog.

What’s Inside the Shopping List Insert
- Clean Items / Cost / Purchase Time table layout
- Minimalist black-and-white design that matches most planner aesthetics (hand-journaling, minimalist, boho, or classic)
- Front and back pages are identical, so you can print double-sided or single-sided without worrying about alignment
- A light vertical guideline in the Cost column to keep your numbers tidy
- SmilelineCo branding printed along the side margin (small and unobtrusive)
Available Sizes: A4, A5, and Personal
This printable comes in three planner-ready sizes:
- A4 — ideal if you’re in Europe, Australia, or anywhere outside North America, or if you use an A4 ring binder or discbound system
- A5 — the most popular planner insert size worldwide, fits standard A5 6-ring binders (Filofax, Kikki.K, Louis Vuitton-style organizers, etc.)
- Personal size — fits compact 6-ring personal planners (Filofax Personal, Kikki.K Personal, and similar)
All three are exported at their true, actual print dimensions — not scaled down from a larger page — so what you see is exactly what prints.

How to Print This Insert at Home (Actual Size, No Scaling)
A few tips so your printable looks crisp and lines up properly in your binder:
- Use your printer’s custom paper size setting. I print mine on an Epson printer — in the print dialog, I select a custom/actual page size matching the insert (A5 or Personal) rather than letting the printer auto-scale to fit a default page.
- Choose “Actual Size” or “100%” scaling — never “Fit to Page.” Fit-to-page will stretch or shrink your margins, which throws off hole placement later.
- If your printer or paper stock doesn’t support A5 or Personal size directly, print on A4 or US Letter paper instead, then trim it down to size. This is completely normal — most home printers aren’t loaded with A5 paper by default.
How I Trim and Hole-Punch My Printables for a Clean Binder Look
If you’re printing on A4/Letter and cutting down to A5 or Personal, here’s my go-to method:
- A craft/paper cutting knife (paper trimmer knife)

👉Finger Knife Set
👉Hobby Knife Set – 12pc
👉Knife With Safety Cap, Sharp, Durable, Precision Knife, 1 Count - A stainless steel ruler (a metal edge keeps your knife from drifting, unlike a plastic ruler)
👉Metal Straight Edge Ruler, 4 pcs, 6″, 8″, 12″, 14″
👉Ruler Metal Straight Edge Stainless Steel Ruler 16 Inch Ruler Set
👉Metal Straight Edge Ruler, 6 pcs, 6″, 8″, 10″, 12″, 14″, 16″
👉Metal Straight Edge Ruler Stainless Steel Ruler 6 Inch 12 Inch 16 Inch Ruler Set - A self-healing cutting mat underneath, to protect your table and get straight, clean edges
👉Self Healing Sewing Mat
👉Self Healing Cutting Mat, A3 Rotary Cutting Sewing
👉Self-Healing Cutting Mat A4, 220x300mm
👉Self Healing Cutting Mat, 23″ x 35″
Once trimmed, I run each page through a 6-ring or discbound hole punch sized to match your binder system, then load it straight in. This same trim-and-punch method works for basically any printable planner insert, so it’s worth setting up once as a permanent little “printing station” if you print inserts regularly.
Printer:
Inkjet or laser printer works. If you don’t have one, you really like these little pages, and you might eventually own your own printer.

How to Use This Shopping List in Your Planner System
A few ways this insert works especially well:
- Weekly grocery run — one sheet per shopping trip, filed behind a “Shopping” or “Home” tab
- Monthly household spending snapshot — fill in several sheets across the month, then compare Cost totals to see where your grocery budget is actually going
- Meal-prep companion — pair it with a meal plan so your list maps directly to what you’re cooking that week
- Family shared binder — since it’s undated, anyone in the household can grab a fresh sheet and start filling it in, no printing required mid-week

What sets SmilelineCo printables apart?
Most printables are either pretty or practical , rarely both. I try to close that gap. Every insert starts as a real system I use myself to run my own life and business, then gets refined until it’s something I’d actually want to look at every day. I’m a designer first, so whether a printable is free or paid, it’s built to print sharp and clean on a home printer, not just look good on a screen. And I make everything myself , no outsourced templates, no shortcuts. This is a one-person shop, and every page carries that.
Is this printable free to download?
Yes ! This one is 100% free for personal use. I share free printables because I know what it feels like to want a little more structure in your day without having to pay for it first. If a simple page like this makes your planner (or your year) feel a little more together, that’s exactly what it’s for.
All printables are for personal use only.
Yes. This printable, along with the graphics, layouts, and designs on SmilelineCo, is for personal use only. Please don’t edit the files, resell them, or re-upload them anywhere else , if you’d like to share it with someone, just send them the link to this post instead. If you’d like to use it for a classroom, workshop, or small group setting, that’s totally fine too , just keep the files unedited and don’t sell or re-host them, and a link back here is always appreciated.
What’s the best way to print these printables?
For best results, I recommend printing on standard A4 paper using your printer’s normal settings. These are designed as high-resolution PDFs, so they’ll stay crisp and clear on any printer , inkjet or laser. Simply download the PDF, open it, and print. If your printable requires trimming or folding, I’ll always include those specifics in the blog post itself, since exact sizes can vary from product to product.
If you’re printing on cardstock or heavier paper, just double-check your printer settings can handle the paper weight , most home printers are fine up to 120–160gsm.
As always, if you make this your own — different colors, added stickers, whatever works for you — I’d love to see it. Happy planning!
